All of the MCU shows that we’ve seen on Disney Plus thus far have been considered canon, but that’ll all change with I Am Groot.
According to James Gunn, this particular series won’t be canon, with the filmmaker saying: “They’re animated shorts so not necessarily part of the Guardians saga. They’re canon to themselves, I’d think.” As if that wasn’t enough, he also responded to a fan over on Instagram, putting the issue to bed by simply saying that the shorts aren’t “canon to the Guardians saga.”
Of course, that doesn’t mean it won’t be worth tuning into I Am Groot – in fact, we’re pretty excited to get our hands on it – but the fact that it isn’t canon is certainly interesting and should give Gunn a bit more flexibility to have some fun with the project.
