With only weeks to go until The Matrix Resurrections drags us back into the wild sci-fi world created by the Wachowskis in the late 90s, fans are still pretty in the dark as to how it’ll all connect to the original trilogy and what lies in wait for us. But at the very least, we know that it’ll call back to the first three films in a clever way.

Speaking in a recent interview, co-writer David Mitchell teased that it’ll reference the movies that preceded it in an “ingenious way.”

“I saw the film in Berlin in September. It’s really good. I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieved a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”

Color us intrigued, and we’ll find out just how The Matrix Resurrections calls back to the iconic original trilogy on December 22nd.
