Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, has confirmed that a new villain is being chosen for the sequel, The Batman Part II. Although he hasn’t revealed who the villain is, he mentioned that fans will be surprised and that it will highlight a different side of Robert Pattinson’s Batman. Reeves described the story for the sequel as a continuation of the first film but with some distinct differences.
Reeves shared this information during an appearance at the Golden Globes and also mentioned the future of The Penguin spin-off series, although he didn’t give any details.
Fans are already speculating about who the new villain might be. Some popular choices include Mr. Freeze, Two-Face, the Court of Owls, and Calendar Man. Clayface is considered a less likely option because of scheduling issues related to a separate horror project within the DC Universe. The variety of potential villains shows that there are many options for Reeves to choose from.

Reeves said, “Yes, of course, or we’d really be in trouble. I hope [it’s surprising]. I think so. I think that the story is a continuation in a certain way and completely different in another. It’s gonna show a different side to Rob… it’s going to be really cool.”
The lack of specific information about the villain reflects where The Batman Part II is in its development. The script is still being finalized, so the production timeline is flexible, and any announcement regarding the villain won’t be made for a while. Right now, the focus is on completing the script before moving into production.
The release date for the film hasn’t been confirmed yet, adding to the uncertainty around the project. Reeves’ comments suggest that the new villain will be different from the Penguin in the first film while still continuing the overall story. Fans remain very excited about The Batman Part II, and Reeves’ hints are only increasing their interest in what’s to come. The original The Batman film is currently available to stream on Max.
