Matt Reeves, the director of 2022’s The Batman, is currently focused on making the sequel, The Batman Part II, which is set to be released on October 1, 2027. Production for the sequel will start later this year, making it five years since Robert Pattinson first played Batman.
Reeves is also interested in creating more spinoff series in The Batman universe, but right now, his main priority is The Batman Part II.
One of the spinoffs, The Penguin, which stars Colin Farrell, has just finished its first season on HBO Max. This series is a prequel that explores how Oswald Cobblepot becomes the Penguin. It received positive feedback and even won a Golden Globe. While Reeves has talked about a second season of The Penguin, it won’t happen until after The Batman Part II is completed. The team is working on a good concept for the second season.

Reeves said, “I would love to do more [spinoff series], the thing we’re really focused on” is The Batman 2. We’re talking about doing the second season of The Penguin, but my big priority is to get The Batman 2 shooting and going, and then it’ll be exciting where we’ll go from there.”
Reeves mentioned that the development of The Batman Part II has taken longer than expected, but he is excited about the project and how it’s progressing. The sequel will see Colin Farrell return as the Penguin, alongside Robert Pattinson as Batman. This sequel is part of a new Batman cinematic universe created by Reeves, which is separate from the main DC Universe managed by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
HBO Max is very interested in producing more spinoffs featuring popular characters from Reeves’ The Batman universe. The success of The Penguin has likely made them confident about expanding this franchise further. The streaming service’s push for shows based on key characters has led to the creation of The Penguin, indicating they want to work with Reeves on more projects in the future. For now, though, the main focus remains on finishing The Batman Part II, essential for linking all the ongoing and future stories in Reeves’ standalone Batman universe.
