The future of the Disney+ Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, is still up in the air, even though it has received good reviews and gained more viewers. Creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford are interested in making a second season and have many ideas for new storylines, but Lucasfilm hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet.
One reason for the uncertainty is that the show’s initial viewership numbers were lower compared to other Star Wars series on Disney+. A big part of a potential second season would be exploring the backstory of Jod Na Nawood. The first season hinted at a sad history involving a Jedi killed during Order 66, but the creators chose not to focus heavily on that, keeping the story from the perspective of the child characters.

They believe this backstory has a lot of potential for future stories, whether in another season or novels and comics. The creators have also talked about a possible time jump in a second season to match the aging of the young actors. This would allow for new challenges and personal growth for the main characters. Additionally, the changes on the planet of Attin after the season finale could lead to interesting new stories.
Even though it’s unclear if there will be a second season, there’s speculation that characters from Skeleton Crew might show up in Dave Filoni’s upcoming New Republic film, which could connect the series to the larger Star Wars universe. The good reception and word-of-mouth support for the show could influence Lucasfilm’s decision.
In the season finale, Jod was revealed to be a true villain rather than a redeemable pirate, which surprised many viewers and increased interest in the character. While some fans want a redemption story for Jod, the creators decided to keep his actions consistent with his character.
Ford said, “We knew that that character archetype was part of Star Wars, so we wanted to play with it, and especially the whole ‘Is he a Jedi or not?’ thing. Is he good or bad? And so our twist was this anti-twist, that he was exactly as he presented to be… Seemingly. In our heads, it’s like the potential to go deeper. That part of the story is something that could be explored in the future. So when you have something that’s a kind of work in progress like that, you leave it open enough to get worked on and made better.”
The creators are waiting for feedback and considering different options for the series’ future. They have plans for new story arcs but mentioned that wildfires in Los Angeles have disrupted their scheduling and discussions. The success of the show, based on viewer numbers and critical praise, will likely be important in Lucasfilm’s final decision about renewing it.
Although nothing has been officially announced, the creators are hopeful about the show’s future and the possibility of exploring Jod’s past in other formats, like books or comics.
