Supergirl Casting Is Finally Confirmed

DC Studios is expanding the cast and details for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham have joined the project and are rumored to play Kara Zor-El’s parents, but it’s unclear if they will be her Kryptonian biological parents (Zor-El and Alura) or her Earthly adoptive parents (Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers). Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is based on a comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

The story follows Kara as she goes on a cosmic adventure for her 21st birthday, meets a character named Ruthye, and seeks revenge against someone named Krem. Other cast members include Eve Ridley as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, and Jason Momoa as Lobo. Krypto, the Superdog, is also expected to play an important role.

Milly Alcock has been cast as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, confirming her roles in both Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, marking her entry into the DC Universe. Her version of Supergirl is said to be “less earnest and more edgy” than previous portrayals. The movie is set to be released on June 26, 2026, while Alcock will appear in Superman on July 11, 2025, though it’s still unclear how big her role will be.

Supergirl Thumb

Gunn said, “I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option. Other movies have been written, but they haven’t been as good as this one. So we’re going to keep going with that. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And that’s more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative.”

James Gunn explained that choosing to make Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the second film in the DC Universe, was based on the quality of Nogueira’s script and the director’s vision. He highlighted that they aim to deliver high-quality projects rather than sticking to a set order of releases.

The story will likely focus on Kara’s experiences and trauma, possibly shedding light on her Kryptonian background, reflecting Gunn’s earlier comments about her having a tougher upbringing compared to Superman. Filming is currently taking place in London.

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow project represents a notable addition to the new DC Universe. The film aims to offer a fresh interpretation of the character by exploring themes of trauma and revenge in a galactic setting. With Milly Alcock in both Supergirl and Superman, it appears they want to connect her character to the larger DC story.

The choice of a relatively lesser-known actress for the leading role and the inclusion of various well-known actors suggests a shift from the past representations of Supergirl, intending to create a new cinematic identity for her. The film’s success will likely depend on how well the story is told and how Alcock’s performance is received.
