The Suicide Squad saw director James Gunn working with a whole bunch of DC characters, but the Joker wasn’t one of them and it seems that there’s a good reason for why that is.
Aside from any storytelling-related decisions for not including him, Gunn says that the Clown Prince of Crime has just been done too many times already, which is true.
“There’s all sorts of other characters I’m interested in doing. Joker isn’t really one of them,” he said. “He’s been done well so many times by so many people. I am much more interested in taking characters who haven’t fully had their shot, or people who I [connect with].”
So, while we can probably expect Gunn to return to the world of DC, it’s safe to say that whatever he does for them next won’t include the iconic villain.
