The words Tom Hanks and creepy don’t typically go together, but then again, he hasn’t made too many films like The Polar Express.
The computer-animated Christmas musical fantasy movie features human characters that are brought to life using live-action motion-capture animation. The result is a project that frequently dips into the uncanny valley, with many critics finding the design and general aesthetic of The Polar Express to be creepy. In fact, Paul Clinton of CNN even called it “horrifying.”
It was an unfortunate outcome for the movie, as the rest of it isn’t bad. And it seems HBO Max users agree, as it’s jumped up a massive 18 places on the most-watched films worldwide list to land comfortably at #5 today. Though whether subscribers are finding the Tom Hanks effort to be as creepy as many did back in 2004 remains unknown.
