Rick and Morty’s writers have offered some insight into why Rick’s backstory in the hit animated show is so dark.

Rick and Morty fans will no doubt know that Rick’s backstory is pretty dark, and it was finally laid out for us in Season 5. But why did it have to go that way? Well, according to the show’s writers, it was due in part to the pandemic.

“I was writing the finale right as the lockdown was happening. And it strangely lined up in a lot of ways,” writer Jeff Loveness said. “That’s maybe why the episode got so dark near the end.”

Writer Albro Lundy also chimed in, explaining:

“It was always something we were super nervous about because revealing someone’s backstory is very much an opportunity for you to let down someone’s expectations. Like, what you come up with is very rarely better than the creative infinity that exists in someone’s head where Rick could have every backstory all at once.”

Rick and Morty recently concluded its fifth season, and a sixth one is already in the works. Though there’s no word on when it may be with us.
