While we always knew it would be a problem for the movie, it’s now been revealed just how much of an issue piracy was for Black Widow.

When Disney announced plans to release it on Disney Plus and in theaters simultaneously, they opened themselves up to pirates and the fact that the film would be uploaded online almost immediately for people to stream illegally. And sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.

It cost the studio a fortune, too, as Deadline reports that an estimated $600M was lost thanks to piracy, meaning Black Widow could’ve been a much bigger moneymaker for the Mouse House had it stayed as a theatrical exclusive.
