While he’s a great actor and a very big star, Chris Hemsworth hasn’t had the best luck when leading a film outside of the MCU. He’s tried and tried to prove himself as a bonafide box office draw, but unless he’s wielding Thor’s hammer, he often fails to deliver sizeable hits.
Two examples of this are Blackhat and The Huntsman: Winter’s War. The first is a thriller directed by Michael Mann which follows a “furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners who hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.” Winter’s War, meanwhile, is a sequel to Snow White and The Huntsman but nowhere near as good. Not that the first film was that great, either, mind you.
But we digress. Over on Netflix, both movies are surging up the charts today, with Blackhat currently the 8th most-watched flick worldwide while Winter’s War sits at #28. This seemingly random burst of popularity can’t be explained, but the fact that Chris Hemsworth‘s Extraction is one of Netflix’s biggest films ever no doubt helps matters when it comes to his older efforts on the platform.
