The Last of Us Season 2 Trailer Covers A Lot More Than Before

The new trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 shows how they plan to adapt The Last of Us Part II. The first season followed the original game’s story closely, while the second season will cover the sequel’s longer storyline across several seasons.

From the trailer, it looks like the show will include a lot of the early events from the game. We see Ellie and Dina in Jackson, Wyoming, which means they’re including the game’s prologue. There are also scenes of Ellie in Seattle during Days 1 and 2 of her journey, ending with a scene that mirrors her encounter with Nora at Lakehill Seattle Hospital near the end of Day 2. This suggests that the season will progress at least this far into Ellie’s story in Seattle.

The series will also feature parts of Abby’s story. The trailer shows her at Saint Mary’s Hospital, a key location for her character. There’s another shot that includes a hook scythe, a weapon linked to a group called the Seraphites, likely representing a moment from the beginning of Abby’s first day in Seattle before she gets captured. By showing both Ellie’s and Abby’s perspectives, it seems the show may alternate between their storylines rather than mixing them up as the game does.

Choosing to tell the story in chronological order helps to avoid the issue of dedicating an entire season to just one character, who might then have little to do in the next season. It allows for a more balanced focus on both Ellie and Abby over multiple seasons.

While the trailer suggests the inclusion of important scenes from the Jackson prologue, Days 1 and 2 of Ellie’s story, and early moments of Abby’s day in Seattle, it’s still possible that some unexpected scenes will be included. We won’t know exactly how much of The Last of Us Part II will be adapted until the season premieres. The storyline’s final parts, including Day 3 for both characters and the epilogue, are likely meant for future seasons. The new season is set to premiere on Max sometime in April.
