Unfortunately, Neo’s big return hasn’t gone down as well as Warner Bros. no doubt hoped it would.
The Matrix Resurrections arrived with a lot of hype last month but failed to really ignite at the box office in the same way its predecessors did. Of course, it did also premiere on HBO Max the same day, which obviously had some impact on things, but the latest reports say that it could lose up to $100 million for Warner Bros.
At $190 million to produce, plus roughly $50 million for marketing, it wasn’t a cheap endeavour and mixed reviews and a lack of significant buzz have seemingly now led to The Matrix Resurrections becoming a bit of a disappointment. Which means that it’s probably the last time we’ll be seeing Neo on the big screen.
