Unfortunately, The Matrix Resurrections hasn’t been the monster hit that Warner Bros. no doubt hoped it would be. It hasn’t flopped, and the reviews are decent if not strong, but overall, it just hasn’t made the same impact on pop culture that the original trilogy did.
As such, it’s perhaps not too surprising to learn that there are no further films being developed for the franchise right now. When asked about what’s to come, producer James McTeigue said:
“Look, for us, I think, at the moment, it’s just the movie you’ve seen. We’ve got no prequel in mind. We’ve got no sequel in mind. We’ve got no further trilogy. But I think the film also works where it’s really open to audience interpretation, like what happened in those 60 years before they fished Neo out again, or Thomas Anderson to Neo. When Neo and Trinity are there at the end, and they’re talking with the analyst, what do they actually mean that they’re going to change? So I think that it’s out there, but it’s not in our wheelhouse at the moment.”
Of course, this isn’t to say that they won’t make another Matrix movie, but for now, we can’t see Warner Bros. being in too big of a rush to produce a fifth one.
