Sadly, Hugo Weaving does not return to play Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections. However, the character does return, as we get a young Agent Smith, and he’s played by Jonathan Groff.
You may know the actor from his work on Broadway or more likely, as the voice of Kristoff in the Frozen movies. In fact, he’s got a number of memorable credits under his belt and gives a terrific performance in the latest outing for the Matrix franchise.
Groff has explained in the past how he studied Weaving’s work in the original trilogy to prepare for the role and it’s safe to say that his hard work paid off. And if you want to see that for yourself, you can catch The Matrix Resurrections in theaters or on HBO Max from today.
