Palak Patel, the Sony executive in charge of the studio’s recent Marvel movies, is leaving the company. His departure comes after a series of films that didn’t do well, such as the Venom trilogy, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter.
While the Venom movies made money, each new one was less successful and received poor reviews. The other three spin-off films are considered some of Sony’s biggest box office flops. Patel’s next job will be as Chief Content Officer at Prime Focus Studios, part of the visual effects company DNEG. During his ten years at Sony, he not only managed Marvel projects but also worked closely on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films and collaborated with Marvel Studios.
Patel’s departure raises concerns about what will happen next with Sony’s Marvel universe. The studio still has a partnership with Marvel Studios for the Spider-Man franchise, and projects like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Spider-Noir are still in the works. However, it looks like plans for other Sony Marvel movies are currently on pause.
Sony’s CEO, Tony Vinciquerra, recently talked about the disappointing box office results for Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. He suggested that the poor reviews from critics were more to blame than any real problems with the films. He also pointed out that Venom did well at the box office, even though it received negative reviews, which shows a gap between what critics think and how audiences respond.

Patel has started a new job at Prime Focus Studios, which is an important change in the film industry. Prime Focus Studios is working on several projects, including the recent co-production of The Garfield Movie, which made over $257 million worldwide. They also have upcoming films like Animal Friends with Legendary Pictures, The Angry Birds Movie 3, and a movie based on the Indian epic Ramayana.
Patel has experience from his time at Sony, where he worked on big franchise films, so that knowledge will be useful in his new position. This move shows that Patel might shift his focus from just managing established franchises to working on a variety of projects as the company grows its production capabilities.
The change in leadership at Sony might lead to a new look at how the studio handles its Marvel projects. While the success of the Venom movies might have seemed like a reason to keep making similar films, the lackluster performance of other spin-offs shows that a reevaluation could be necessary.
