James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has announced that the new Batman in the DC Universe will not tell his origin story, similar to how Marvel handled Spider-Man with Tom Holland. Instead of starting from the beginning of Batman’s story, the filmmakers will assume the audience already knows how Bruce Wayne became Batman after witnessing his parents’ murder.
This decision is in line with a trend in superhero movies where filmmakers prefer to focus on the character’s current adventures instead of retelling the well-known backstory. The new Batman will be separate from Matt Reeves’ The Batman movies starring Robert Pattinson, and it won’t revisit Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman. Gunn believes that viewers are already familiar with this key moment, making it unnecessary to show it again.

The director said, “It was just so nice to skip past it and just deal with more with the repercussions… and just explore it from the perspective of someone else finding out about it and having a lot of questions.”
This approach is also being used for Superman in the upcoming film Superman: Legacy, which will not tell his origin story either. Gunn thinks that repeating these origin tales can lead to audience fatigue.
By skipping the origin stories, Gunn hopes to streamline the narrative and put more emphasis on the action and character development. This means the films can dive directly into new stories and highlight the characters’ relationships and challenges rather than going over familiar events. The goal is to engage audiences quickly by jumping straight into the action, using what they already know about these characters.
