James Gunn Is Hard At Work Writing More For DCU

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, is currently busy with post-production on both Superman: Legacy and Peacemaker Season 2 while also starting to prepare for another DC project. He shared this on Threads, noting that his main focus is on finishing these two projects, but he also spends a lot of time on the early writing stages of a new project. He mentioned that this current workload isn’t as overwhelming as directing projects.

Gunn’s role at DC Studios includes more than just directing and writing. He is producing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the second movie in the new DC Universe, and he recently finished work on the animated series Creature Commandos, which he wrote and produced. This shows how involved he is with various DC projects.

Gunn said, “The bulk of my time is dealing with post-production on Superman and Peacemaker, but I’m also spending a fair amount of time pre-writing my next DC Studios project and watching dailies and offering ideas on the other projects. It’s much less overwhelming than when I was directing.”

There’s a lot of speculation about what his next project might be. Some possibilities include The Authority, which Gunn has expressed interest in, as it features characters that, while good-intentioned, are ready to take drastic actions to reach their goals. Another option could be a series about Booster Gold, a hero from the future who uses advanced technology for fame. Additionally, a sequel to Superman: Legacy could happen, potentially continuing the story from the first film and introducing Supergirl after her movie.

Gunn’s announcement about starting pre-production hints at a larger plan for the DC Universe. Many other DC projects are also in development, such as The Brave and the Bold, Paradise Lost, Waller, and Lanterns.

These interconnected projects indicate a clear strategy for expanding the DC Universe, which will officially start with Superman: Legacy set to release on July 11, 2025. His work in pre-writing for a new project further highlights this strategic plan and suggests ambitious goals for DC Studios.

His involvement in multiple roles—post-production, producing, and writing—shows the significant effort being put into building a cohesive and expansive cinematic universe. The upcoming project, although still a mystery, will likely give further insights into the direction and priorities of the evolving DC Universe.
