Adam Scott, who is known for his roles in Severance and Parks and Recreation, has shared his doubts about working in comic book movies again after being in Sony’s Madame Web. This film, released in 2024, didn’t do well with critics or audiences and only made $100 million worldwide.
In the movie, Scott plays Ben Parker, who is the brother-in-law of Mary Parker (played by Emma Roberts) and uncle to Peter Parker. Although Scott has loved comic books since childhood and enjoys superhero movies as a fan, his experience with this unsuccessful film has made him think twice about taking on more roles in that genre.

The negative reception of Madame Web has led Sony to drop plans for a franchise featuring the character. This, along with other underwhelming films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe like Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Kraven the Hunter, has resulted in significant changes within Sony Pictures’ leadership team. Several high-ranking executives, including the EVP of Production and Development and the Chairman and CEO, have left the company after these disappointing box office results.
The executives believe that the films received bad press, which they think unfairly affected their success since they claim the movies weren’t actually that bad. Despite the film’s poor critical reception, Madame Web reportedly did better on streaming services. Scott’s comments about his future in superhero films came during interviews for the second season of Severance, which debuted on Apple TV+ in January 2025.
In Madame Web, he had an important role, and while the film didn’t do well overall, many critics acknowledged his performance as one of its few bright spots. He mentioned that he is open to new opportunities (“Never say never”), but his hesitation stems from the negative experience he had while making Madame Web.
