Pam & Tommy is now on Hulu and given its subject matter – covering the relationship between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee – it’s got a fair amount of nudity in it. And in a recent interview, director Craig Gillespie explained why they took things as far as they did.
We really sat down and tried to be specific with where we needed nudity and where it would serve character and story versus just for the sake of it. We very consciously steered away from the tape. But we thought there would be opportunities — particularly when they get married, and they had this whole courtship for four days in Cancun which is sort of beautifully innocent in the sense that they decided not to have sex until they get married. So we wanted to capture the euphoria of that in a really fun way and it seemed like the right opportunity for that situation there.
And then obviously there’s the iconic [scene]… Tommy is rather well known in his memoirs for talking to his penis, and trying to figure out how to make it be a character statement and something that is informative to where he is, this is the relationship with Pam and how he feels about her. We really tried to be strategic with those moments and not shy away from the characters.
